Bottom line – wear sunscreen. Every single day.
Just do it. Get in the habit of applying sunscreen to yourself and your kids every single day. Even when it’s cloudy or overcast.
And don’t forget to apply when you’re heading out of town on a road trip – the sun’s rays can still burn and cause damage through the windows of your car.
Look for Broad Spectrum
With the new FDA regulations that were put into place in 2012, the main thing you need to look for in sunscreen is Broad Spectrum. That means the sunscreen is protecting against UVB rays AND UVA rays – and that’s important to protect against sunburn, early aging and skin cancer. Make sure that the brand you’re buying clearly says Broad Spectrum on the label.
SPF 15 or Higher
Make sure you’re using an SPF of 15 or higher. Period. (And don’t forget the Broad Spectrum).
Spray or Lotion or Stick?
It doesn’t matter. As long as it’s a broad spectrum sunsreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, you’re good to go. Just make sure you never spray sunscreen on your face (or your child’s.) Spray it on your hands and wipe it on little faces instead.
Use the Right Amount
Don’t skimp on the sunscreen. A good rule of thumb is to use a golf-ball sized dollop to cover a child from head to toe. (And don’t forget those lips!)
Try to apply sunscreen 15 minutes before you go outside. And if you forget, apply it as soon as you remember!
Reapply Every 2 Hours
Set a timer on your phone, and reapply sunscreen every two hours – and more often than that if you’re sweating or jumping in and out of the water. Even water resistant sunscreen needs to be reapplied.
Limit Sun Exposure
No sunscreen can provide all day protection. Even when you’re doing everything right with sunscreen, it’s still best to limit your time in the sun – especially between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm – when the sun’s rays are the most intense. So hit the playground early in the morning and head to the pool after naps if you can.
Protect Your Eyes
Sunlight reflecting off snow, sand, or water further increases exposure to UV radiation and increases your risk of developing eye problems. Look for sunglasses that offer 99 to 100 percent UV protection – and wear them. And don’t forget about the kiddos. Their sunglasses should offer the same protection.
Babies under 6 Months
Limit sun exposure to babies under the age of 6 months. Find lots of shade and cover their skin with light clothing. All children over the age of 6 months should wear sunscreen outside.
Color Doesn’t Matter
Experts recommend that all races wears sunscreen to protect from the harmful rays of the sun.
